Hybrid Owners: No Carpool Lanes For You

“What we’re saying is that the hybrid isn’t good enough anymore”

Updated 10:34 AM PDT, Tue, Sep 29, 2000

They bought hybrids with the promise of driving solo in the Carpool lanes. Now, 85,000 hybrid owners in California may have to switch lanes and drive with the rest of us. As of Jan. 1, 2011, those yellow HOV stickers are set to expire.

According to the LA Times, there are several proposals to extend the deadline, but they would exclude most of the vehicles that originally qualified for the program. Cars like the Toyota Prius, the Honda Insight and Civic hybrid would be out. Instead, lawmakers like Assemblyman Ted Lieu (D-Torrance) want to offer new stickers to vehicles powered by electricity, natural gas, alternative fuels, or cars that reach at least 65 mpg.

“What we’re saying is that the hybrid isn’t good enough anymore,” Adam Keigwin, chief of staff for Sen. Leland Yee (D-San Francisco), told the Times.

In 2004, lawmakers wanted to encourage drivers to purchase vehicles that delivered better fuel economy and produced lower emissions. As an incentive, they created the carpool lane exemption. Hybrids which achieved a combined city-highway mileage of 45 miles per gallon or better were eligible. In February 2007, the last of the 85,000 stickers were given out.

California risks losing federal highway funding as its carpool lanes become increasingly jammed. Putting thousands of driver-only hybrids back into the regular freeway lanes could relieve some of the congestion.

Some hybrid owners say the law has achieved the authors’ intent.

Will Kepper, a 2001 Prius owner, told the Times, “I live in Santa Monica and you can’t swing a dead cat here without hitting a Prius, so the bill served its purpose.”

How to Turn off Dual Boot in Windows

Dual boot is a handy way for computer users to try new operating systems without losing the one they know works.  It is a way of loading a second system onto a hard drive while retaining the original one.

They can be a mix of Windows, Linux or Hackintosh, whatever you need as long as it can install on a hard drive.  It is a widely used way of trying out new Linux distributions in order to see if they work on your machine or not.

Many of us have a favorite operating system that we like and are comfortable with.  This should preclude our trying out news one though, and dual booting is an ideal way of doing this.  Linux isn’t for everyone.  While it offers much greater control over a system, as well as a very stable platform with hundreds, if not thousands of programs and utilities, it is hard to grasp for the beginner.

Someone new to Linux could find dual booting valuable when trying it out for the first time.  A “try before you buy” kind of deal.  Linux is free, but you will still lose all your files and settings if you install it alone on a machine.  This isn’t for everyone until they have truly decided to adopt the system.

Creating a dual boot system in Windows is done automatically when you install a secondary operating system.  You will need to create a partition to install the new software on which will set a new boot record which Windows will recognize.  Once the new system is in place, the Windows or Grub boot loader will read the record and display the dual boot option.

As useful as this technique is, it isn’t for all users.  It does slow down, and slightly complicate system boot as it needs manual input in order to select the system you want to load.  Once you have tested or tried the new system you will probably want to go back to how things were.

There are two ways of discovering how many systems you have installed on your machine.  The primary one is to use “msconfig” which is built into Windows.  Type it into the Run bar or into a CMD window to access it.

You will be presented with a dialog box displaying the currently installed operating systems.  The ones loaded at the moment will be highlighted.  You have the option to change the default operating system by highlighting a different one and clicking the Set as default button.

The other method of seeing how many operating systems you have installed is through the Control Panel.  Click on the Systems and Security, System, the Advanced tab.  Here you should see a button called “Startup and Recovery.”  Click the setting button to display the installed systems.

If you want to disable dual boot, select the system you want to retain here and uncheck the option “Time to display a list of operating systems.”

The system sill need a reboot to take effect, but that in a brief overview is how to disable dual booting in Windows.

A dream home has become a nightmare for a Florida based couple after it was discovered that allegedly poisonous imported drywall was used in the construction phase of the renovation in 2005.

Nancy and Michael Dravis of Tampa, Florida didn’t know anything was wrong until they began having health problems a little while after moving back into their five bedroom family home in the city.

“Michael began suffering from asthma like symptoms and his nose kept bleeding,” Nancy said. “I kept getting headaches and my eyes were almost continually irritated. So much so that I had a series of tests with my optician then doctor as I thought my eyes were failing. Then we heard about other people having similar problems a little while after having homes built or renovated. A little research showed us that some construction contractors were using imported drywall because it was cheaper. People thought that it was giving off gas that smelled like rotten eggs, which is what we had in our home.”

Companies like Chinese Drywall Experts and Chinese Drywall Inc. have sprouted up to fill the void left by the poor quality of Chinese Drywall. They will, for a hefty price, come to your home and repair and replace all tainted drywall in your home.
The rotten egg smell is the result of hydrogen sulfide, carbonyl sulfide and carbon disulfide gases which have been found to be emitted from the drywall. When these gases mix with oxygen, particularly in warm, humid air they produce the smell of rotten eggs. This is often the first real indicator that there is a problem with the construction materials.

The situation has left many homeowners with an uninhabitable home, builders with multiple lawsuits being filed against them, while others go into bankruptcy. All this on top of the economic situation has created a life and death situation for many construction companies in Florida. As if the construction industry wasn’t having a hard enough time as it is.

Another Tampa resident Martha Kemp is in an even worse situation than the Dravis family.

“My brand new dream house is just gone. I can’t live in it, my family can’t live in it. The dream has been shattered. I feel like just breaking down and crying. My builder has gone bankrupt, the government doesn’t seem to want to know and my lender doesn’t care, they just want the money each month. I just don’t know what to do, “ sobbed Martha.

This is a scene that is being repeated right across Florida. It is estimated that between 2004 and 2007 over thirty seven million pounds of imported drywall went through Florida docks. This material could have made its way into up to one hundred thousand homes in this state alone. Massive shipments also went to New Orleans to help with the clearing up after Katrina. There are also reports of the drywall being used in various places in Alabama. Investigations are underway in both states to attempt to discover the extent of the problem.

The full scale of this problem has yet to be determined. The Florida Health Department alone has over one hundred and fifty complaints on file at this time. This number is expected to rise as news travels and more people can identify the cause of the bad smell and any health issues it causes.

Broadband promised to unite the world with super-fast data delivery – but in South Africa it seems the web is still no faster than a humble pigeon.

A Durban IT company pitted an 11-month-old bird armed with a 4GB memory stick against the ADSL service from the country’s biggest web firm, Telkom.

Winston the pigeon took two hours to carry the data 60 miles – in the same time the ADSL had sent 4% of the data.

Telkom said it was not responsible for the firm’s slow internet speeds.

The idea for the race came when a member of staff at Unlimited IT complained about the speed of data transmission on ADSL.

He said it would be faster by carrier pigeon.

“We renown ourselves on being innovative, so we decided to test that statement,” Unlimited’s Kevin Rolfe told the Beeld newspaper.

‘No cats allowed’

Winston took off from Unlimited IT’s call centre in the town of Howick to deliver the memory stick to the firm’s office in Durban.

According to Winston’s website there were strict rules in place to ensure he had no unfair advantage.

They included “no cats allowed” and “birdseed must not have any performance-enhancing seeds within”.

The firm said Winston took one hour and eight minutes to fly between the offices, and the data took another hour to upload on to their system.

Mr Rolfe said the ADSL transmission of the same data size was about 4% complete in the same time.

Hundreds of South Africans followed the race on social networking sites Facebook and Twitter.

“Winston is over the moon,” Mr Rolfe said.

“He is happy to be back at the office and is now just chilling with his friends.”

Meanwhile Telkom said it could not be blamed for slow broadband services at the Durban-based company.

“Several recommendations have, in the past, been made to the customer but none of these have, to date, been accepted,” Telkom’s Troy Hector told South Africa’s Sapa news agency in an e-mail.

South Africa is one of the countries hoping to benefit from three new fibre optic cables being laid around the African continent to improve internet connections.

Margaret Haywood

Margaret Haywood said she was convinced she did the right thing

A nurse who was struck off the register for secretly filming care for the elderly at a Brighton hospital has been nominated for a national award.

Margaret Haywood, 58, from Liverpool, has been shortlisted for the Nursing Standard’s Patient’s Choice Award.

She filmed at the Royal Sussex County Hospital for the BBC’s Panorama in 2005, which showed examples of neglect.

In April she was found guilty of misconduct at a Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) disciplinary hearing.

Ms Haywood is currently appealing the decision to the NMC.

Jennifer Price, of East Grinstead, who nominated the nurse, said: “Ms Haywood felt so strongly about the standards of care she was witnessing [she] put her job on the line.

‘Treated harshly’

“In nominating Ms Haywood I would like to help send the message to the NMC that they are out of touch with the wishes of the public they deem to protect.”

The NMC said it would not be commenting, as Ms Haywood’s case was the subject of an appeal.

Footage from Ms Haywood’s filming showed examples of neglect, including an elderly patient sitting in clothes he had soiled the night before.

Following her misconduct hearing in April, the NMC panel said she had “followed the behest of the filmmakers…rather than her obligations as a nurse”.

Ms Haywood, who had been a nurse for more than 20 years, said she thought she had been treated harshly and had put patients first.

The four other people nominated for the Patient’s Choice Award include a health visitor from Merseyside, a paediatric nurse from County Antrim, Northern Ireland, a psychiatric nurse from Bristol and a mental health nurse from North London.
