Arthritis is something that affects millions of people around the world. There are two types, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the fluid cushion between bones breaks down and the bones rub together. Rheumatoid arthritis occurs when the body’s immune system mistakes the joints for intruders and attacks them. Both conditions are painful and hard to live with. Conventional medicine has developed treatments to help manage pain and help healing, and now red light therapy seeks to help.
Red light therapy is a part of photo-rejuvenation, which is the use of light to treat the body. It has been around for a few years now, and has been rapidly gaining popularity as a very effective pain reliever. So much so, that many physicians and hospitals are suggesting it as a treatment for arthritis alongside conventional medical solutions.
Red light therapy works by using LED light to stimulate cell growth. The light contains photons that stimulate the body to release more energy for cell growth. These cells then replace the worn or damaged cells. This process happens naturally in the body, but at a much slower rate. Depending on the age and health of the patient, the levels at which cells regenerate can differ considerably. Red light therapy has been proven to accelerate this process, which is why it’s being promoted as an effective treatment.
Other positive effects of the treatment is the relaxing of blood vessels to increase blood flow and increasing oxygen levels in the blood. This in turn stimulates white blood cell numbers which also helps healing. Collagen is also produced which helps the healing of the joint and the skin. This therapy also helps with the reduction of inflammation, healing of cuts, sports injuries and even anti-aging. For once, all these assertions have been borne out in testing, so red light therapy really does deliver on its claims. The ability of the body to absorb light is what makes the treatment work so well.
The fact that red light therapy is simple to apply and completely non-intrusive has helped immensely in its acceptance in medicine. Even those who don’t believe in the treatment know there are no side-effects, so agreeing with the patient’s wishes to try it have no downside. The increasing numbers of supporters of the treatment are giving ever strengthening credence to the claims, and many notable organizations have researched, and endorsed the treatment for arthritis.
Currently there is only one consumer unit approved by the FDA and it’s from LED Technologies. Depending on where you purchase it, the machine will probably cost anywhere between $350 and $450. There are others on the market that are probably as good, they just won’t have the FDA backing. That will change as the technology develops and more units come to the market.
The sooner these kinds of treatments are made available, and affordable, the quicker we can all start benefiting from them.
